Cyber tactics such as identity spoofing, phishing, and double brokering allow criminals to infiltrate logistics networks before shipments even move. Fake carrier registrations, forged insurance documents, and manipulated corporate records are becoming increasingly common.
Nolan Dragon of Tive explains that criminals often monitor logistics operations remotely before striking. By studying shipment patterns and communication flows, they identify the exact moment when visibility drops or verification processes weaken.
At that point, fraudulent actors may impersonate legitimate carriers or manipulate shipment details to divert high-value goods.
The result is a new type of cargo theft that blends physical logistics crime with digital deception.
High-Value Shipments Are Attractive Targets
Another driver behind the surge in freight fraud is the changing nature of modern shipments.
Today’s cargo is often more compact and valuable than in the past. Electronics, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, and specialty products can carry enormous value within relatively small shipments.
Milan Luketic, CTO of Birdseye Security Solutions, explains that this shift has made freight shipments extremely attractive targets. Criminal groups increasingly use advanced tools, including artificial intelligence, to forge identities and manipulate documentation.
The growing sophistication of these attacks makes it harder for traditional detection systems to identify fraud.
Fraud Has Become a Network-Level Threat
Freight fraud does not only affect a single shipment. A stolen load can disrupt production schedules, damage customer relationships, and undermine trust across logistics networks.
Experts emphasize that combating freight fraud requires more than basic verification procedures. It demands stronger collaboration between carriers, brokers, technology providers, and regulators.
Without coordinated action, the increasingly digital supply chain will remain vulnerable to exploitation.
